Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit'a, opens with a memory of his grandfather Baba Meir: every son, every grandson, anyone leaving the house, he would run and press a bag of za'atar into their hand — put this in your pocket. The Baba Sali did the same at his table, scattering za'atar beneath the cloth before receiving people. People search for spiritual remedies against the evil eye, against bad thoughts, against bad company; here, Rabbi Pinto says, is something simple and easy that the world's greatest sages refused to give up.
The holy Zohar speaks of it in Parashat Bo and Parashat Vayakhel, and the Torah shows hyssop in four places of impurity: at the blood on the doorposts in Egypt, when Israel stood at the forty-ninth gate and the Holy One, blessed be He, asked not for a lulav or an etrog but for hyssop; in the purification of the leper; in the impurity of the dead; and in the Red Heifer. Rabbi Pinto traces its power through the house of Rahab — whose name spells hyssop — and through the verse "there shall be no strange god in you." Yet he is careful: za'atar does not replace Torah and mitzvot. It is a remedy added to the avodah — in the pocket, on the table, in the house, in the car — to distance fear, bad thoughts and the evil eye.
