Nullifying the “Bria” in 965
Maimonides writes that complete repentance requires a person to resolve never to sin again, so sincerely that the “Knower of Secrets” (God) can testify to this commitment. How can a human, possessing free will, ever receive such a testimony?
The answer lies in the Jerusalem Talmud (Yerushalmi). While a complete entity (a Bria) is normally never nullified in a mixture, the Jerusalem Talmud states that a Bria can indeed be nullified, but it requires a ratio of 965 parts.
Man is a Bria—a complete creation—and our negative traits can feel permanent. But if we add the 5 days of transition (the final hours of the Yom Kippur holiday itself) to the 40 days (960 hours) of Elul, we reach exactly 965 hours. When we immerse ourselves in the 965 hours of this holy season, our past deficiencies are completely nullified and dissolved according to Jewish law.
