The Gemara’s words are strange: the secret of Ibur may not be revealed to the nations. Some commentators read Ibur as the intercalation of the year — the leap month that adjusts the calendar so the festivals never drift out of their season. Others read it as the inner secret of the Torah, the Kabbalah, the sod that is not handed to the outside world. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, brings a third reading from a sage: Ibur is gestation itself.
A baby in its mother’s womb does one thing — it eats. It eats and eats until it is strong enough to survive outside, and then it must leave, because if it stayed it would consume what others need. That, Rabbi Pinto teaches, is what France has been for us: an Ibur, a womb of exile where we eat, gather strength, and grow — and then the moment comes when we must go out and begin our own life. Leaving is not loss. Leaving is birth.
