Cain and Abel were the first brothers. They were fifty days old when Cain rose and killed Abel — over nothing, over jealousy, over hatred, when the whole world was already theirs. Isaac and Esau: everyday jealousy. Jacob and Esau: everyday jealousy. Joseph and the tribes: everyday jealousy. And so the greatest blessing we give our children is not “like Abraham” or “like Isaac” but “may G-d make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.” Jacob took the birthright from Manasseh, the elder, and gave it to Ephraim, the younger — and they did not fight.
