If you sit with someone and feel that they are cooling your spirit, teaches Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, you must not sit with them. A person you sit with, and you feel they are bringing you down, cooling you, bringing you down — they simply make you weak. There are people whose whole life is jokes, everything is said lightly — these are people with a lack of self-confidence, people who do not believe in themselves. Their self-belief comes from weakening you. There are people who feel that the more they weaken you, the stronger they are. They do not try to be strong — that I should be strong, rise in Torah, fear of Heaven, make progress — no: their work is to weaken you, so that they are stronger than you.
And that, says Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, is the work of Amalek: to weaken, to cool, to cool, to weaken. He sees something orderly and seeks to weaken it. The holy Zohar says: in a place where there is no head, Satan becomes the head. The evil inclination does not want a head — it does not want anyone above it. In a place where there is no head, Satan becomes the head: you simply destroy the place, you bring Satan to be the head of the place.
