“Do Not Put Yourself in Danger” — The One Risk the Torah Never Allows

🎬 Even the greatest tzaddik may not put himself in a place of danger. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens the weekly portion with the Gemara in Kiddushin — Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Meir Baal HaNess by the sea, and Satan standing before the Holy One, Blessed be He — to teach us the one thing a person may never risk.
The Torah forbids a person to place himself in danger — and not only danger to the body, but danger to the soul: not to walk where transgressions are committed, not to stand where the evil inclination is waiting. The Gemara says that if one path leads to idolatry and another to immorality, a person must take neither. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, brings the astonishing account of Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Meir Baal HaNess, who walked by the sea where people were sinning, and Satan rose before the Holy One, Blessed be He, and asked to test them. A heavenly voice cried out: take care with Rabbi Akiva and his Torah. “Do not believe in yourself until the day of your death” — no one is guaranteed. A High Priest served eighty years in the Holy of Holies and denied everything at the end of his life.
Then the portion of the week: Avraham Avinu, the pillar of the heavenly throne, sends his trusted servant Eliezer to find a match for Isaac — and Eliezer, who wanted Isaac for his own daughter, is trusted anyway, because the cursed cannot cling to the blessed. King David begged for a trial so that we would say “the G-d of David”; he asked to raise the trials of Abraham from ten to eleven, and the Holy One, Blessed be He, let him fail so that we would not be obligated beyond ten. Every Jew passes ten existential trials — moments when every door is closed and no effort helps. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, explains that such a trial has a fixed beginning and a fixed end, and all a person needs is peace of mind and strength to pass through it with as few mistakes as possible. A person who has not stood in the trial is like a broken window: the glue may hold the glass, but the cracks remain.
