“The Gemara asks: why did the starling go to the crow? The starling has every sign of a pure bird, but because it frequents the crow — tell me who you haunt and I’ll tell you who you are.” You want to know who a man is? Look at his friends. If his friends are bad, he is bad too; if his friends are liars, he is a liar too. Whatever his pretenses, the friend reflects the man, teaches Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a.
That is why the Gemara says: for a contract, look who signs first — if the first is a man of worth, sign after him; if not, do not sign at all. Do not remain near a man of evil. Rabbi Eliezer Papo says: never associate with a thief. Many believed they could act in secret by investing with a thief, with a dishonest man — but at the end, says Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, your honest money placed with a corrupt person is lost, for he will lose everything and you with him. It is not for nothing that the Gemara says the starling went to the crow: a pure bird, but near the crow it becomes impure.
