The Ben Ish Chai tells of a very wealthy father with two sons who was about to die. “I don’t want my children to be partners — partnerships don’t end well,” he said, and he divided his estate: each son wealthy on his own. When hard times came, one son saw the signs, sold everything, and buried his fortune as diamonds in the ground. The other said, “If my father earned a billion, I’ll earn ten billion” — he borrowed, and borrowed, and lost, until from grief he collapsed and died. Teaches Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a: the wise son read the signs and stopped; the proud son ignored them and was ruined.
The Mishnah in Avot says a person who bursts out in speech is a golem — because if you shout before you think, you lock onto a wrong word out of pride and argue it to the end. The Gemara says that when a ship is about to sink, the birds flee from it — they feel it even before the waves. This is the great principle: be alert, listen to the signs G-d sends you, and know how to neutralize things one by one. You have a problem?
