A person must strive for perfection in the things he does — and when he makes a mistake, he must first know that he made one. That is the whole battle. The mistake is not the disaster; the disaster is the argument that follows it, the one that says: “I sinned in one thing, so everything is permitted, the yoke is already broken, so let me break all the rules.” Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, refuses that logic in the plainest words: no — in this I erred a little, and this is what I must fix.
His remedy is structural: break life into pieces and stop carrying it as one package. Jacob our forefather did exactly this when Esau came toward him — he divided the people with him into two camps and said, “If Esau comes to one camp and strikes it, the remaining camp shall escape.” You did not pray Shacharit? Pray Mincha, and afterward repent for Shacharit. You ate what is not kosher today? Do not keep eating what is not kosher. Keep every area in its own place, in its own world, and the Holy One, blessed be He, deals with Israel the same way — one fall does not take the rest.
