π¬ G-d tells Abraham: go forth from your land, from your birthplace, from your father’s house. The holy Or HaChaim asks why all three β and Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens the answer: you cannot flourish where they already know you, and you cannot delay when the call comes.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, brings the holy Or HaChaim’s question on this week’s portion: why does G-d say go forth from your land, your birthplace, and your father’s house β why not simply βgo forthβ? The answer runs deep. It is hard for a person to grow and flourish in the place where he lived. Everyone knows you; whatever you start, they will not believe in you. If they dismiss you from the start, where will you find the strength to begin? If you want to rise, distance yourself from places where people know you.
Then Abraham himself. Before him, the world divided divinity among many things β the sun for money, the moon for children β and Nimrod built a faith of idols like a lineup of medicines. Abraham investigated and concluded the world must have one manager, and Nimrod threw him into the fiery furnace. He did not sit quietly. And when the Holy One came to him β without warning, without a vision, unlike every prophet before β and said go forth, Abraham did not say βlet me think.β At that very moment he left his house, his furniture, his clothes, and went. That is the moral Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, draws: the person of high stature who receives a great reward is the one who gets up and runs β not the one who delays and waits.
