🎬 Plenty of people do mitzvot, give kindness, pray and learn Torah — but only where it is comfortable. Rabbi Yoel Moshe Pinto, shlit’a, names the root of Sodom’s sin and gives the one measure by which a person can know where he stands.
Many people perform mitzvot, do acts of kindness, pray and study Torah. They are happy and they want to do the mitzvot — but as long as it is not a commitment, they are not ready for the mitzvot to bind them. They are not ready to accept the full yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven, that everything I do must be subject to the holy Torah. That, says Rabbi Yoel Moshe Pinto, shlit’a, was the sin of the people of Sodom: where it is good, where there is profit, where everything looks fine, they do mitzvot and good deeds; where it is a burden, where there is no great profit, they do not keep them.
What is the root of their evil? An unwillingness to accept a true commitment. And what is the foundation of the Jewish soul — the thing by which the Holy One, blessed be He, measures a person, and by which a person can measure himself? Rabbi Yoel Moshe Pinto, shlit’a, answers: the level of commitment to the mitzvot. If he is committed in every situation — winter and summer, day and night, weekdays and Shabbat — that is the sign and the token that the Holy One, blessed be He, desires him.
