The scoffers said Sarah conceived from Abimelech, not from Abraham. So the Holy One
Blessed be He, formed Isaac’s features to be identical to Abraham’s — and the lie was silenced
forever. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens Parashat Chayei Sarah and finds in that one
Midrash the principle that shapes an entire life of service.
Rashi brings the Midrash Tanchuma on the verse “These are the generations of Isaac, son of
Abraham; Abraham fathered Isaac.” For decades Sarah stood beside Abraham and did not
conceive; then, after her time in the house of Abimelech, she bore Isaac — and the base people
of the generation mocked: she conceived from Abimelech. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a,
shows why every word of our Sages is eternal. The Midrash stands on four figures. Abraham is
the first servant of the Holy One, Blessed be He, the one who spread faith in the world. Sarah is
the source of every blessing and every salvation that came to Abraham — for her sake he was
treated well, for her sake his name became known, by her merit every rescue reached him. Isaac
is the great salvation itself, the first time the world recognised that the Holy One, Blessed be He,
performs wonders — and in his merit the future redemption will come. And Abimelech — “Avi
Melech,” My Father is King — is the Name by which we address the Holy One, Blessed be He:
Our Father, our King.
Now the scoffers become clear. They are not philosophers; they are people who refuse to take
life seriously, who will not get up and act. Their claim — “Sarah conceived from Abimelech” —
means: the salvation came from Heaven alone, and has nothing to do with the servant of G-d.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, draws out the consequence: whoever believes salvation is
only mercy feels no obligation, thinking G-d was kind today and will be kind tomorrow whether I
act well or not. That is why the scoffers of every generation keep repeating the same slander.
But we who belong to Abraham our father say the opposite: the salvations are born of service,
of mitzvot, of prayers, of the lines a person draws day after day. Every one of us must distance
himself from that lie — because the Torah immortalised it precisely so that we would recognise
it when we hear it again.
