Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens with a principle: as long as a person lacks closure — someone who does not know how to finish things and leaves them open — that is the root of all problems. Once you finish, you know it is over, and you can begin something new. But some people do not want to finish, so they leave things open, and those open matters generate problem after problem. Even if the person forgets, deep in the soul it stays difficult and painful — and he does not even realize why he is worried.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, then turns to Adam. When G-d told him, “Cursed is the ground for your sake; in sorrow you shall eat of it,” Adam did not accept an open-ended decree. He asked: “Master of the Universe, until when?” Give me a limit, a boundary, a sign. And G-d answered: “When a child is born already circumcised, you will know the hardship of earning a living is beginning to leave the world.” This is the teaching of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai in the Zohar — quoted here as a Midrash. Uncertainty, the rabbi teaches, is what makes pain unbearable; a boundary is what makes it bearable.
