The greatest righteous men do not see days of joy in their lives — they suffer for the sins of the generation.
The holy Rabbi was immensely wealthy, yet at the end of his days he raised his ten fingers to heaven and said, “Holy One, it is known to You that I did not enjoy this world even as much as a small fingernail.” Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens a window into the hidden world of the tzaddikim — those who carry the pain of their generation.
He speaks of Rabbi Meir Abuhatzeira, who suffered all his life and died young; of Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira, who lived long but buried many children; of the Baal HaTanya, who endured harsh persecutions yet left the power of Torah to all generations; and of Rabbi Nachman, who was hated and pelted in the street, who lost his son and his wife — suffering impossible to describe — and whose Torah today sustains the world. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, teaches that no one knows what the tzaddik endures, and that the righteous suffer for the sins of the generation, for the breath of our nostrils, the L-rd’s anointed.
