The Chatam Sofer says: an angel oversees the blood — and there is a reason a woman in niddah must not stand in the room at a brit.
The Chatam Sofer taught that when a circumcision is performed, it is not good for a woman in niddah to be present in the room during the ceremony — because there is an angel who oversees the blood, whether it flows or not. In honor of the Chatam Sofer’s yahrzeit, Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, relates a chilling story.
Once the Chatam Sofer was at a brit, and when they circumcised the baby the blood simply would not stop flowing. He asked, “Is there a woman in niddah here? Let her leave.” She left — and the bleeding stopped, for the angel in charge of blood tells it to flow for a woman in niddah, and when a baby who has just had a brit is present, the blood keeps flowing. That is how the Chatam Sofer stopped the baby’s bleeding. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, draws out the hidden teaching.
