A person always finds it convenient to be a people pleaser. One thinks: I am nice to everyone, I am good with everyone, I smile at this one and say hello to that one, so I am a good politician with everybody. But that, says Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, is something that only appears on the outside. Because with the real people who are with you, who were there when you needed them — the ones you thought you were playing with — when you truly need them you will not find them. You had everyone, but you did not know how to prioritize the main thing.
And that is how it was with Abraham. With Abraham you could not go halfway: whatever he did, he did with perfection, with devotion, giving his life. Haran, Abraham’s family, wanted to be good with this one and good with that one — and in the end he was left with nothing from any side. He wanted to play both sides, and what remained? He lost everything. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, draws the principle: when a person knows “I am on one path, and this is the path, no matter what” — that is where you dig your true foundation in life. Please everyone and play with everything, and in the end nothing remains in your hand, absolutely nothing.
