🎬 The Or HaChaim opens this week’s portion with one word: go — and go now. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, asks about the man nobody notices: Haran, who went with Abraham into Nimrod’s furnace and was burned — and from whom came every matriarch of Israel.
Abraham did not go to sell his house or collect his money; he got up and left at once. Lot went with him without being convinced — he simply clung to him. And there was a third man, Haran. When Nimrod built his furnace of fire, Abraham was thrown in and was not burned, Lot was thrown in and was saved — Haran was burned. Yet our mother Sarah was Haran’s daughter. Rebecca was his granddaughter, Rachel and Leah came from him, Lot was his son, and from Lot came Ruth the Moabite — mother of Israel’s royalty, of King David. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, shows that all the wives of Israel’s leaders, all that first faith and self-sacrifice, came from one man who was burned.
The Rama of Fano gives the key: Abraham was the outline of the letter, and Haran was the colour inside it — draw an Aleph, then fill it in. Abraham took Isaac to the binding and in the end did not slaughter him: that was the outline. The ram was the colour inside. So it was with Haran — he was the inner colour of the furnace, and out of that colour came faith, trust and self-sacrifice in the daughters of Israel. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, ends with the principle: people think a small deed has no weight, but in the smallest deed — and surely in a great one — a person gives strength to his children and grandchildren. G-d sends many trials, and standing them is not for today alone: it is for future generations. Haran was burned, but he believed with perfect faith, and that faith stayed in his daughters.
