Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, shows that Isaac is set apart. G-d calls “Abraham, Abraham” — twice; “Jacob, Jacob” — twice; but Isaac only once. Isaac represents the spirit. The Gaon of Vilna says the spirit is not planted deep and heavy in a person: it is above, and only a thin thread of it comes down. That thread you either guard, strengthen and give life to — or you ruin it and burn it. Abraham is the prince of G-d among us: money, children, a kingdom, and when he died the whole world wept. Jacob is the fight — Esau, Laban, Dina, Joseph — up and down, wars without end, and, says Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, he never breaks and never lowers his arms.
The Ramban teaches that whatever the patriarchs lived happens to every person. Isaac is the soul — guard it. Daily life is Jacob. When you finish with Dina and with Joseph, you reach Abraham; then the trial returns, and you go back to Jacob. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, warns: many people succeed, hit one crisis, break, and never rise again. No — you go up, you are Abraham; the descent comes, you are Jacob, and you fight until it ends. And one last thing: the evil inclination makes us remember only the bad. Count the good G-d has given you, thank Him for it — and He gives more, and more, and more.
