Abraham our Father opened an Eshel in Beersheba — eating, drinking, lodging — and when guests thanked him he said: do not thank me, thank the Almighty, and bless the Grace After Meals. Rabba tested Rava and Abaye on exactly that blessing: not their scholarship, but whether they would continue Abraham’s path. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, follows both students through the Gemara and shows how each one carried Abraham forward in an opposite direction.
Abaye went outside and looked at the heavens — total detachment from this world, a supernatural life, his soul rooted in Cain who sowed flax and drained the earth. Rava pointed to the roof inside his own house — service from within the world, order, nature; his name reversed spells Be’er, a well where all the water is in one place. Abraham himself served G-d both ways: in Ur Kasdim from within creation and in order, in Haran in miracle and detachment. The Torah tells him this week: go forth from Haran — go from both places, and unite them.
