🎬 Sarah dies the moment she hears that Isaac was bound. Rashi says she heard the news and her soul departed. But the Gemara calls “news” good tidings — so what good news took her life? Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens the parashah and answers.
The Gemara in Sanhedrin teaches that a prophet who withholds his prophecy is liable, and that every prophecy the Holy One gives is known to all the prophets. Sarah was greater than Abraham in prophecy — “whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her voice”; she is called Iscah because she gazed in the Holy Spirit. So when Abraham took Isaac and no prophecy came to her, Sarah reasoned that this was not from Heaven at all: Satan had seized him, and he was going to slaughter his son the way the nations sacrificed children to Molech. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, shows how her silence was itself the proof.
Then she heard the end of it: “Now I know that you fear G-d, and you have not withheld your son, your only one.” That was the news — the binding was a prophecy after all, and Isaac was alive. Her soul left her on good tidings, and the four giants who brought her that word, Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai and their father, merited that the city be called Kiryat Arba. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, turns the verse into a question for us: what would your soul do on hearing that everything you feared was never true?
