Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, teaches that every weekly portion speaks about what will be with a person in life. Bereshit symbolizes a beginning; Noach symbolizes something complex. A flood can come in a person’s livelihood — a business that suddenly runs into difficulties; in domestic harmony, in family, in health. It is not only water from the sky: a small shop that suddenly collapses under problems is a flood, and a son who turns disrespectful and goes down a bad path is a flood too. Flood is a general concept, and the portion is a foundation for all the situations each of us passes through.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, then gives the way through. When the flood came, the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Noach: come into the ark. Our sages ask what an ark is — an ark, teivah, is a word: come into the words of the Torah. If a trouble comes, enter the Torah, enter its words; make a window in the ark, bring light inside the Torah. Many people in crisis look for all kinds of solutions that are not really solutions, and they come out bruised — losing a hand, losing a leg. The greatness is when a person has a problem and knows how to survive it and remain whole, losing nothing essential from his life.
