On the eve of Yom Kippur, Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, rosh yeshiva of Shuva Israel, stands before the Holy One, blessed be He, with thousands of people and gives voice to a broken heart: “Master of the Universe, look at us — how broken our hearts are, how filled with fear and awe of Yom Kippur.” He reminds us of the words we all tremble to say: who shall live and who shall die, who shall be satisfied and who shall be captive, who shall be plundered — for this day is like Rosh Hashanah and is sealed on Yom Kippur.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens the deeper meaning of the day: the heavenly hosts are afraid, the angels are afraid, all of creation trembles. And the service of the High Priest on Yom Kippur marks the purity of the people of Israel, marks repentance, marks closeness to the Holy One, blessed be He — marking our detachment from all physicality, from all matter, from this world that is material. As the years go by, he warns, we become more immersed and drawn into the material; Yom Kippur is where we come home.
