🎬 Every weekly Torah portion speaks to every Jew about the things he will face in life. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, uncovers the lesson of Parashat Noah: the flood is not only water — it is any sudden crisis — and the Torah hands us the way to survive it whole.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, teaches that Genesis symbolizes the beginning of life, something new — and that Noah symbolizes the complex moments of life. If we look at what happened in the portion of Noah, it is a lesson for the times when a flood suddenly comes upon a person: a flood in his livelihood, when his business, G-d forbid, runs into trouble; a flood in domestic harmony, in the family, in health. A flood is not necessarily water falling from the heavens. A flood is also a small grocery store that suddenly fills with problems, or a son who goes down a bad path — that too is a flood. A flood is something general, not limited to specific things.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, then shows the solution the Holy Torah gives. When the flood came, G-d said to Noah, “Come into the ark.” Our sages teach: what is an ark? An ark is a word — enter into the words of the Torah. “Make a window for the ark” — if you want light within the Torah, make a window, a skylight of the Torah. Many people seeking solutions find none that truly solve the problem, and end up bruised, losing a part of themselves. The greatness is when a person faces a problem and knows how to survive it and stay whole — without losing anything essential from his life.
