🎬 In the Book of Genesis, teaches Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, every punishment a person receives is a mirror of the transgression he committed — and the Flood is the clearest proof. The generation of the Flood lost all shame; so the waters rose up from the depths to erase that very trait.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens with a powerful rule from the Book of Genesis: the punishment a person receives is a mirror of the transgression he committed and of the wrong he did. Whoever faces a certain trouble must engage in thoughts of repentance and, from the very form of the problem that befell him, understand what he must rectify. “There is nothing new under the sun” — as it was from creation, so it is in every generation.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, then asks: how does the Flood reflect the sin of its generation? That generation sinned with brazen shamelessness — stealing, robbing, immorality — and, above all, lost all shame; the thief woke in the morning and went about as if nothing had happened. Normally, one who sins and feels ashamed withdraws into himself, and that shame itself brings atonement. So measure for measure, G-d did not let the water sink quietly into the earth — the rains fell and the depths were opened, and the water rose and rose by fifteen cubits above the highest mountains. And when a person has no shame, teaches Rabbi Pinto, he can reach every evil — as we see in Ham, who was not ashamed before his father, and from whom came Nimrod, who rebelled against G-d.
