🎬 A person’s name. What power does a name have over the one who carries it? Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens Parashat Lech Lecha — where G-d changes two names — and shows that a name is not a label. It is the soul’s own name, and it shapes the life.
He begins with a story that is hard to forget: a man whose company was worth twenty-seven billion, and it all went down the drain. The name of the company was the name of an idol. Through three incarnations, everyone who bought in lost everything. Then the Torah: Abram becomes Abraham, Sarai becomes Sarah — the Holy One adds a letter and a world. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, brings the Ari in Sha’ar HaGilgulim: a person’s name is the name of the person’s soul, it is the person’s power. The parents are given something like prophecy when they name a child.
That is why the Children of Israel left Egypt: they did not change their names, their language or their clothing. The Maharal of Prague adds that the name is the boundary of a person — what he is and how much he can contain.
