Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, follows the drop step by step. The sun warms the sea, mist rises from the earth, and a drop goes up — then another, and another — until they are a cloud. The cloud travels to another country, meets another cloud, and the rain begins. That same drop that rose from below to above falls again — and where does it land? Not in the light. In a dark place, tens or hundreds of metres down inside the ground, alone.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, then shows what happens in that darkness. Another drop falls and becomes its friend, and another, and together they try to seep through. They reach a large, hard rock and they fight — they fight to make a hole, they fight for years, and in the end they break through and come out as a spring. That is the answer to the rabbi’s question: what does a spring symbolize? The whole way — the sun, the rising, the far journey, the fall, the darkness, the friends found underground, the rock that was finally broken. And the greatest title of all belongs to the person who goes through the entire path of suffering and stands, who does not fall: in the end, he is purity, and the purest of all.
