Rabbi Nachman’s Parable of the Happiest Man in the World

✨ Why was a poor repairman living in a tiny basement happier than the rich and powerful king? Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, brings the parable of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov — the king who thought he was the happiest man in the world, and the simple laborer who truly was — and reveals where real happiness actually comes from.
Rabbi Nachman of Breslov tells of a king who was rich, powerful and great, who had every good thing a person could have. One day this king said, “I am the happiest person in the world.” He went out in disguise, wandering the streets to see if anyone else was happy — and through the window of a tiny underground room he heard a poor man rejoicing: “G-d, I am the happiest man in the world.” The man earned a few coins a day repairing what was broken for people, and lived in joy with what he had. The king, explains Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, could not understand how a simple laborer could be happier than he.
So the king issued decree after decree to take away the man’s livelihood — first banning private repairs, then the cleaning of animal stalls, then conscripting him into the army without pay. Yet each time the man simply found other work and stayed joyful. When the king finally ordered him to behead an innocent man, the laborer pleaded and refused, and the king’s mercy was stirred. The morality, teaches Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, is twofold: true happiness depends not on wealth or circumstance, but on emuna and simplicity; and one who rises to greatness and detaches from reality — from the friends and people who stood by him — slowly builds fantasies in his head and brings harsh judgment upon himself. May we all merit to hold fast to emuna, to reality, and to true joy.
