In the sacred chain of the Abuchatzeira and Pinto dynasties, there are names that shine with a quiet, penetrating light—a light of pure modesty, unwavering faith, and total devotion to the Torah. Among these holy figures, the name Rebbetzin Simcha Abuchatzeira a”h, the wife of our master the holy Baba Meir (Rabbi Meir Shalom) zt”l, stands as a beacon for all generations.
As we mark the anniversary of her passing on the eve of the 9th of Av, we look back at the “lines to her character” recently published by the World Center for the Heritage of Israel’s Communities under the leadership of Mori VeRabi Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto, shlita.
“Lalla Simcha”: A Life of Wondrous Modesty
Known affectionately as “Lalla Simcha” by the residents of Erfoud and the Abuchatzeira family, the Rebbetzin was the personification of the verse, “The entire glory of the king’s daughter is within.”
Growing up in the home of her father, the scholar Rabbi Eliyahu Shukrun in Melilla, Morocco, she inhaled the scent of Torah from her earliest days. Her modesty was legendary; it is told that even when she performed the simplest household chores, she was so careful that not even a handsbreadth of her arm was ever revealed, pulling her sleeves down to cover her fingers even while washing dishes. This was not merely a habit, but a reflection of a soul that felt the constant presence of the Shekhinah (the Divine Presence).
The Match Ordained from Heaven
The story of her marriage to Baba Meir is a testament to the “holy eyes” of his father, the Baba Sali, Rabbi Yisrael Abuchatzeira zt”l. While staying at her father’s home, the Baba Sali saw the young Simcha and immediately declared: “She, and no other, shall be the wife of my son, Meir.”
When the wedding day arrived in 5693 (1933), the holiness of the couple was already apparent. Baba Meir, fearing that the festivities would distract him from his learning, hid himself in an empty synagogue, locking the windows and doors to remain immersed in Torah until the very moment of the Chuppah.
A Pillar for the “Lion of the Family”
For over thirty years, the Rebbetzin was the silent engine behind Baba Meir’s greatness. She took the entire burden of the household upon her shoulders so that the “Illuminating Mirror” could continue his holy work.
The Rebbetzin’s devotion to her husband’s Torah was awe-inspiring. It is recounted that once, while Baba Meir was sitting in his chair, he fell asleep. The Rebbetzin sat perfectly still in her own seat for a long duration, refusing to move or even stand up, lest the slightest sound or movement disturb his rest. To her, the rest of a Torah giant was a holy act that she was duty-bound to protect.
A Legacy of Holiness
Rebbetzin Simcha passed away in 1965, leaving behind a legacy of holy children, including the late Rabbi Elazar Abuchatzeira zt”l, who viewed his mother’s path as the ultimate guide for life.
Today, as we study the life of this righteous woman, we are reminded of the words of Rabbi Akiva: “Mine and yours is hers.” All the Torah and all the light of the Abuchatzeira dynasty is credited to the silent, modest, and powerful strength of the Rebbetzins who stood by their sides.
May her merit protect the entire House of Israel, and may the study of her holy life bring blessings, healing, and the final Redemption speedily in our days.
