וְהָיָה, מֵהַנַּחַל תִּשְׁתֶּה; וְאֶת הָעֹרְבִים צִוִּיתִי, לְכַלְכֶּלְךָ שָׁם. וַיֵּלֶךְ וַיַּעַשׂ, כִּדְבַר יְהוָה; וַיֵּלֶךְ, וַיֵּשֶׁב בְּנַחַל כְּרִית, אֲשֶׁר, עַל פְּנֵי הַיַּרְדֵּן. וְהָעֹרְבִים, מְבִאִים לוֹ לֶחֶם וּבָשָׂר בַּבֹּקֶר, וְלֶחֶם וּבָשָׂר, בָּעָרֶב; וּמִן הַנַּחַל, יִשְׁתֶּה:

“And it shall be, that you shall drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” So he went and did according to the word of the Lord; for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan. And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

כִּי כֹה אָמַר יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, כַּד הַקֶּמַח לֹא תִכְלָה, וְצַפַּחַת הַשֶּׁמֶן, לֹא תֶחְסָר: עַד יוֹם תֵּת יְהוָה, גֶּשֶׁם עַל פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה. וַתֵּלֶךְ וַתַּעֲשֶׂה, כִּדְבַר אֵלִיָּהוּ; וַתֹּאכַל הִיא וָהוּא וּבֵיתָהּ, יָמִים. כַּד הַקֶּמַח לֹא כָלָתָה, וְצַפַּחַת הַשֶּׁמֶן לֹא חָסֵר כִּדְבַר יְהוָה, אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר בְּיַד אֵלִיָּהוּ:

For thus says the Lord, G-d of Israel: “The jar of flour shall not be spent, neither shall the jug of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.” And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah; and she, and he, and her household, did eat many days. The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which He spoke through Elijah.

And he said to her: “Give me your son.” And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the upper chamber where he stayed, and laid him upon his own bed. And he cried unto the Lord: “O Lord my G-d, have You also brought evil upon the widow with whom I lodge, by slaying her son?” And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the Lord: “O Lord my G-d, I pray You, let this child’s soul come into him again.” And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. And Elijah took the child and brought him down into the house, and gave him to his mother, saying: “See, your son lives.”

Elijah built an altar of twelve stones, dug a trench around it, laid the wood and sacrifice, and drenched it three times with water until the trench was full. At the evening offering he prayed: “Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that You, O Lord, are G-d!” Then fire fell from heaven, consuming the burnt-offering, wood, stones, dust, and water. All the people fell upon their faces and proclaimed: “The Lord, He is G-d! The Lord, He is G-d!”

Elijah went to the top of Carmel, bowed down upon the earth, and placed his face between his knees in fervent prayer. Seven times he sent his servant to watch the sea. On the seventh time, a cloud the size of a man’s palm arose, and quickly the skies grew dark with wind and clouds, pouring out an abundant, drought-breaking rain.

An angel touched Elijah beneath a broom tree and provided a hearth-baked cake and a cruise of water. After eating twice at the angel’s command, he walked in the divine nourishment of that meal forty days and forty nights unto Horeb, the mount of G-d.

וַיָּבֹא שָׁם אֶל הַמְּעָרָה, וַיָּלֶן שָׁם; וְהִנֵּה דְבַר יְהוָה, אֵלָיו, וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ, מַה לְּךָ פֹה אֵלִיָּהוּ. וַיֹּאמֶר, צֵא וְעָמַדְתָּ בָהָר לִפְנֵי יְהוָה, וְהִנֵּה יְהוָה עֹבֵר וְרוּחַ גְּדוֹלָה וְחָזָק מְפָרֵק הָרִים וּמְשַׁבֵּר סְלָעִים לִפְנֵי יְהוָה, לֹא בָרוּחַ יְהוָה; וְאַחַר הָרוּחַ רַעַשׁ, לֹא בָרַעַשׁ יְהוָה. וְאַחַר הָרַעַשׁ אֵשׁ, לֹא בָאֵשׁ יְהוָה; וְאַחַר הָאֵשׁ, קוֹל דְּמָמָה דַקָּה. וַיְהִי כִּשְׁמֹעַ אֵלִיָּהוּ, וַיָּלֶט פָּנָיו בְּאַדַּרְתּוֹ, וַיֵּצֵא, וַיַּעֲמֹד פֶּתַח הַמְּעָרָה; וְהִנֵּה אֵלָיו, קוֹל, וַיֹּאמֶר, מַה לְּךָ פֹה אֵלִיָּהוּ:

A mighty wind shattered mountains and broke rocks, but G-d was not in the wind; after the wind an earthquake, but G-d was not in the earthquake; after the earthquake a fire, but G-d was not in the fire; and after the fire: a still, small voice. Hearing it, Elijah wrapped his face in his cloak and stood before the Lord.

A prophet approached King Ahab promising that G-d would deliver the overwhelming Aramean multitude into his hands. Israel marched forth, struck the horses and chariots, and defeated Aram with great slaughter.

Elijah denounced Ahab for the murder of Naboth: “In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your blood, even yours.” In exact fulfillment, when Ahab was killed in battle and his chariot was washed at the pool of Samaria, the dogs licked his blood.

Elijah intercepted the messengers of King Ahaziah who sought counsel from the idol Baal-zebub: “You shall not come down from the bed upon which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.” The king died according to the exact prophecy spoken by Elijah.

וַיַּעֲנֶה אֵלִיָּהוּ, וַיְדַבֵּר אֶל שַׂר הַחֲמִשִּׁים, וְאִם אִישׁ אֱלֹהִים אָנִי, תֵּרֶד אֵשׁ מִן הַשָּׁמַיִם וְתֹאכַל אֹתְךָ וְאֶת חֲמִשֶּׁיךָ; וַתֵּרֶד אֵשׁ מִן הַשָּׁמַיִם, וַתֹּאכַל אֹתוֹ וְאֶת חֲמִשָּׁיו:

When the king’s arrogant captain ordered him to surrender, Elijah declared: “If I be a man of G-d, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” Divine fire fell from heaven and consumed the captain and his soldiers.

Elijah rolled up his mantle and struck the waters of the Jordan; they divided to the right and left, and both he and Elisha crossed over on dry ground.

As the two prophets walked together, a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and parted them both; and Elijah ascended into heaven in a whirlwind before Elisha’s eyes.

Elisha took the fallen cloak of Elijah and struck the waters, crying: “Where is the Lord, G-d of Elijah?” The waters parted to both sides, and Elisha crossed over as Elijah’s successor.

וַיֹּאמְרוּ אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר, אֶל אֱלִישָׁע, הִנֵּה נָא מוֹשַׁב הָעִיר טוֹב, כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲדֹנִי רֹאֶה; וְהַמַּיִם רָעִים, וְהָאָרֶץ מְשַׁכָּלֶת. וַיֹּאמֶר, קְחוּ לִי צְלֹחִית חֲדָשָׁה, וְשִׂימוּ שָׁם, מֶלַח; וַיִּקְחוּ, אֵלָיו. וַיֵּצֵא אֶל מוֹצָא הַמַּיִם, וַיַּשְׁלֶךְ שָׁם מֶלַח; וַיֹּאמֶר כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה, רִפִּאתִי לַמַּיִם הָאֵלֶּה לֹא יִהְיֶה מִשָּׁם עוֹד, מָוֶת וּמְשַׁכָּלֶת. וַיֵּרָפוּ הַמַּיִם, עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה, כִּדְבַר אֱלִישָׁע, אֲשֶׁר דִּבֵּר:

The men of Jericho pleaded that their water brought death and miscarriage. Elisha took a new jar with salt, cast it into the spring, and proclaimed: “I have healed these waters; no more death shall come from them.” The spring was purified permanently.

וַיַּעַל מִשָּׁם, בֵּית אֵל; וְהוּא עֹלֶהבַדֶּרֶךְ, וּנְעָרִים קְטַנִּים יָצְאוּ מִן הָעִיר, וַיִּתְקַלְּסוּ בוֹ וַיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ, עֲלֵה קֵרֵחַ עֲלֵה קֵרֵחַ. וַיִּפֶן אַחֲרָיו וַיִּרְאֵם, וַיְקַלְלֵם בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה; וַתֵּצֶאנָה שְׁתַּיִם דֻּבִּים, מִן הַיַּעַר, וַתְּבַקַּעְנָה מֵהֶם, אַרְבָּעִים וּשְׁנֵי יְלָדִים:

As Elisha went up to Beth-el, disrespectful youths mocked him saying, “Go up, baldhead!” He cursed them in the name of the Lord, and two she-bears emerged from the forest and mauled forty-two of them.

וַיֹּאמֶר, כֹּה אָמַר יְהוָה: עָשׂה הַנַּחַל הַזֶּה, גֵּבִים גֵּבִים. כִּי כֹה אָמַר יְהוָה, לֹא תִרְאוּ רוּחַ וְלֹא תִרְאוּ גֶשֶׁם, וְהַנַּחַל הַהוּא, יִמָּלֵא מָיִם; וּשְׁתִיתֶם אַתֶּם וּמִקְנֵיכֶם, וּבְהֶמְתְּכֶם. וַיְהִי בַבֹּקֶר כַּעֲלוֹת הַמִּנְחָה, וְהִנֵּה מַיִם בָּאִים מִדֶּרְךְ אֱדוֹם; וַתִּמָּלֵא הָאָרֶץ, אֶת הַמָּיִם:

In the parched wilderness, Elisha promised: “You shall see neither wind nor rain, yet this dry valley shall be filled with water.” At the morning offering, water surged from the way of Edom and filled the country, quenching the thirst of the allied kings and their hosts.

G-d gave Moab into Israel’s hand. The Moabites mistook the sunrise reflecting red upon the water for blood and rushed forward heedlessly, where Israel rose up and routed them completely.

A destitute prophet’s widow faced a ruthless creditor who came to take her sons into slavery. Elisha commanded her to borrow empty vessels from all her neighbors; her single jar poured oil continually until every vessel was brimming, delivering her family from debt and poverty.

Elisha promised his generous, barren Shunammite hostess: “At this season next year, you shall embrace a son.” The woman conceived and bore a son at the exact time Elisha had prophesied.

When the child died, Elisha shut the door, prayed to G-d, and lay upon the boy mouth-to-mouth, eye-to-eye, and hand-to-hand until the child’s flesh grew warm. Elisha paced the house and stretched over him again; the boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.

During a famine, poisonous wild gourds were mistakenly gathered into the stew pot. As the men cried out, “There is death in the pot!”, Elisha threw flour into the cauldron, purifying the food instantly so all ate safely.

A man brought twenty small loaves of barley tofeed a hundred men. Elisha declared: “Give it to the people; for thus says the Lord: They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.” They ate and had plenty left over, according to the word of the Lord.

Elisha commanded General Naaman of Aram to dip seven times in the Jordan River. When he obeyed the man of G-d, his flesh returned pure and smooth as the flesh of a little child, and he was cleansed.

When Gehazi greedily chased after Naaman for silver, Elisha perceived his secret deceit: “The leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and your seed forever.” Gehazi walked out from his presence struck with leprosy as white as snow.

A borrowed iron axe head broke and fell into the deep water of the Jordan. Elisha cut a piece of wood and threw it in, causing the heavy iron to float miraculously to the surface.

Whenever the King of Aram planned secret ambushes against Israel, Elisha discerned his moves through divine insight and warned Israel’s king, repeatedly delivering his people from defeat.

Surrounded by hostile Syrian forces, Elisha calmed his terrified servant: “Fear not, for those with us are more than those with them.” He prayed, and the young man’s eyes were opened to see the mountain filled with angelic horses and chariots of fire.

Sitting with the elders, Elisha foresaw the king’s executioner dispatched to behead him. He told them to hold the assassin fast behind the door until the king arrived.

In the peak of famine, Elisha prophesied: “Tomorrow by this time, a measure of fine flour shall sell for a shekel in Samaria’s gate.” Overnight, G-d routed the Aramean army, and the city was flooded with abundant food.

The royal aide scoffed at G-d’s promise. Elisha replied: “You shall see it with your eyes, but shall not eat of it.” He was trampled to death by the surging crowds at the gate as prophesied.

Elisha foretold that King Ben-Hadad would die and Hazael would reign. The next morning, Hazael suffocated the king with a wet blanket and seized the throne.

When Moabite raiders disrupted a burial, the mourners cast the deceased man into Elisha’s tomb. As soon as the dead man touched the holy prophet’s bones, he revived immediately and stood on his feet.
