“And they believed in the L-rd and in Moses His servant” — this is faith in the Holy One, blessed be He, and faith in the sages. Even if sometimes there are deniers who speak against the rabbis, says Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, it is faith that will return; it will pass like a passing virus, and in the end they will return, and in you they will believe forever. This is a promise that G-d made.
Why does a person distance himself from the Torah, from a community, or from a rabbi? Maimonides asks, and answers: because he fell spiritually — and then he seeks to distance himself in order to permit himself all things. For as long as he is in a community he cannot do certain things, and as long as he is connected to a rabbi he cannot do certain things.
