🎬 Abraham passes the hardest test of his life — the knife is raised, the son is bound — and then it ends. What does he do in the very next second? Not rest. And that second is why we blow the shofar. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens Akeidat Yitzchak and Chayei Sarah.
Why is it called the Binding of Isaac and not the Offering of Isaac? Because Isaac was thirty-eight years old when his father bound him — and he said to Abraham: “Father, tie me beforehand, so that if I am afraid and I move, I will not flee from the altar.” Isaac did not trust himself against the evil inclination. He was the perfect offering, holy and pure, and still he needed to be bound. Then how much more so we, in a distant and orphaned generation, with such a powerful yetzer hara — how much mercy we need. That is why we say the Binding of Isaac every single day. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, shows that this is not a story that ended; the ashes of Isaac are piled on the altar in every generation, and whenever there is judgment over the people of Israel, the Holy One, Blessed be He, remembers it.
And here is the greatness of Abraham. The test ends, Isaac is alive, the son born at a hundred years old is standing before him — and Abraham does not stop for a single moment to rest. He lifts his eyes and sees a ram caught in the thicket by its horns, and immediately says: I will offer it. That is why we take the horn and blow the shofar — not for the ram, but for a father who went from good deed to good deed without pausing. Whoever stops to say “now I have done enough” begins to go down; if you do not climb, you descend. And Eliezer, Abraham’s servant, teaches the other half: “I am Abraham’s servant” — he never took credit for his own success. Then the blessing of the L-rd brings wealth and He adds no trouble with it, because Abraham took everything from Heaven with joy. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, closes: these portions sharpen our faith, and as faith grows, Heaven grants great abundance.
