🎬 The verse calls Noah a tzaddik — and in the same breath tamim. Two words, and they are not synonyms. One is about doing the will of the Holy One; the other is about being whole. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, walks through the difference and ends on the question that matters: which is better?
What does it mean when we call a man a tzaddik? And what do we mean by tamim? The tzaddik does the will of the Holy One — that is justice, din, the straight line drawn between what is commanded and what is done. The tamim is wholeness: nothing missing, nothing broken, the whole thing intact as it came. Noah carries both titles in one verse, and Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, uses that verse to separate two words we usually blur.
And then the question: which is better? A man who fulfils every obligation, or a man who is simply whole? The verse does not answer it for us, and that is deliberate — the answer depends on what you are building and where you stand. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, leaves the question standing, and that is the point: once you can tell the two apart, you can finally ask honestly which one you actually are.
