🎬 There is a holy spark inside everything you eat. Bless it, and you lift it up through all four levels of creation. Skip the blessing, and it goes back down — sometimes for another two hundred years. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, explains the Malbim on what a blessing actually does.
The Malbim asks: what is a sacrifice? The physical parts burn here below, and the fire and smoke that rise lift the spiritual parts upward. Now look at the four levels: inanimate — earth, stone; then the vegetative — fruit and trees; then the animate — beasts that eat the plant and carry it inside themselves; and above them the speaking being, man. When a person slaughters, blesses, eats and speaks words of Torah, he raises the inanimate, the plant and the animal up into the speaking level — and the thing is rectified. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, puts it plainly: one blessing, and you have lifted a spark.
But eat without a blessing and you have corrupted it. That spark falls again and waits — fifty years, seventy, two hundred — and when it returns, that soul prosecutes the person who left it there. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, warns that most people prefer not to hear this: “I don’t know, I didn’t hear, everything is fine.” No — you are filling a warehouse with difficult things. The moment you take, bless, and gather the food in holiness, you do not know what prosecution you dismantled with one blessing. That is why the Sages said the table is like the altar: what is burned below is raised above, and a blessing is the hand that lifts it.
