🎬 There is a Midrash about a king who married the same woman, divorced her, and took her back ten times — and ten children were born. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, uses it to open the hardest question in a person’s life: why does everything close in front of me?
The Midrash is about Abraham our father. The Holy One, Blessed be He, gave him trial after trial — “Go forth from your land,” and nine more. At the tenth, Abraham asked G-d to swear that He would not test him again, and G-d swore. And at that very moment they told him that Sarah had died — which is another trial. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, draws out the principle: there is a daily trial and there is an existential trial.
An existential trial can be something very small — but for you it is the hardest thing in the world, the end of the world. You go right, the door is closed. Left, closed. Straight, closed. You feel that everything is shut against you. Every Jew passes ten of these in life, each in his own way. Pass one and you rise to a higher level; fail it and you do not rise. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, ends with the Gemara: the trials are hard, but they are faithful to their end date — and when the date comes, they end. Be strong. Do not break. Every pain has an end.
