Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens with the verse: “And Noah begot three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth.” He traces the pattern of three through creation — Adam’s three sons Cain, Abel and Seth; the three patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob — and explains that the three currents running through the entire world flow from the names of Noah’s children. A name, he teaches, is not a label. It is the essence of the person, the root of their abilities, the point in the soul that the outside cannot see.

When sages collecting money for the yeshiva met a bearded man named Kedar who looked perfectly righteous, everyone trusted him — Rabbi Meir did not, and hid his share in a cemetery. After Shabbat the money was gone. “Kedar is a nation of upheavals,” he explained. A name tells you who stands before you. That is why, the rabbi warns, parents must choose names in holiness, with counsel from Torah scholars — not because a name was fashionable that year.
