When a Jew is in trouble, I am with him in trouble.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, speaks with tears of how the people of Israel were built stone upon stone — through the exile in Egypt, the building of the Land, the First Temple and its destruction, the return and the Second Temple, and nearly two thousand years of exiles and suffering. After the Temple was destroyed there were times when not a single Jew lived in the Land of Israel.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, reminds us: they annihilated the people of Israel, yet we always remained united — we argued and differed, but we were cautious with one another. What happened a year and a half ago: did anyone ask if a Jew was religious or secular, Sephardic or Ashkenazi? Everyone was ready to jump into the furnace for our brothers and sisters. A Jew who is sick, a Jew in trouble — we do not ask who he is. When a Jew is in trouble, I am with him in trouble.
