✨ How does a person guard himself from sin? Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, reveals the twofold foundation our Sages taught: to keep your rabbi always before your eyes — and to engrave upon your soul the words “I have set the Lord always before me.”
It is written, “and your eyes shall see your teacher” — a person must always have his rabbi before his eyes. The holy rebbe of Satmar taught that every person needs two rabbis: one rabbi in this world — whom he asks, consults, prays for, and who blesses him — and one rabbi who has passed away, a tzaddik in heaven whose soul remains bound to him, and to whom he prays to be an advocate on high. This, says Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, is the first foundation.
The second foundation, teaches Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, is “I have set the Lord always before me.” A person should imagine, as the books of Kabbalah teach, a great tablet — a sign written in letters of fire — bearing these words, so that whenever he closes his eyes he sees them before him. Just as the image of his father appeared before Yosef HaTzaddik and kept him from sinning, so do these words distance a person from sin and from all that is bad. Guard your eyes, guard your soul — and let the tzaddik and the Name be always before you.
