🎬 What is Melaveh Malkah — and why does every Jew sit down to a meal after Shabbat? Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens the story of King David, who asked Heaven for the day of his death, was told only “on the holy Sabbath” — and turned every Saturday night into a feast of life.
The Melaveh Malkah meal is a tradition from King David. Our Sages teach that David said to the Holy One, Blessed be He: “Master of the Universe, when will I depart this world? When is the day of my passing?” And the Holy One, Blessed be He answered him: in Heaven a person’s day of death is never revealed — no one knows the day on which they will die. So David pressed further: if You will not tell me the date, at least tell me which day of the week it will be — Sunday, Monday, Tuesday? And he was told: “You will die on the holy Sabbath.” Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, reads the whole exchange as a lesson in how a person lives with an unknown end.
So what did David do? Every Sabbath that passed without his dying, at the conclusion of the Sabbath King David made a Melaveh Malkah feast, and said: “If I did not die this Sabbath, another week will pass for me without dying.” He feasted because he remained alive that Sabbath — and that is where the Melaveh Malkah meal comes from. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, draws out what it means for us: the Melaveh Malkah meal that every Jew makes after Shabbat awakens the strength of King David, who feasted every Saturday night to celebrate being alive and having another week to live.
