The custom is short and its reason is enormous. There is a tradition that Miriam’s well emerges into the world on Saturday night — the well of Miriam the prophetess, which stands always in the Kinneret by Tiberias. And they say further that throughout the whole world there is the power, the air and the spirit of Miriam’s well. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, brings this from the early sages and draws out the practical consequence: on Saturday night the righteous and the pious are careful to take a cup of water and drink.
And why are they careful? Because Miriam’s well is healing. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, is precise about the measure of it: the well heals from all troubles, from all illnesses, from all things. A cup of water after Shabbat, taken with the knowledge of what is present in the world at that hour — that is the whole of the segulah.
