🎬 After the flood the Holy One says: “I will no longer curse man — this is the last time.” What was in that offering that changed the decree? Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens the Malbim and shows what happens in every meal we eat.
The Malbim asks the question we should all ask: what is a sacrifice? And he answers from the verse “And the Lord smelled the soothing aroma.” The body of the animal is burned to ash down here, while the smoke and the fire that rise lift the spiritual parts upward. That is the whole secret: the physical is consumed below, and the spirit inside is raised above. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, calls these frightening words — because they mean nothing in this world is inert.
So how do we bring those parts and truly rectify them? A person washes his hands, blesses, lifts the food — and if he acts in holiness, that meal becomes an offering. There is a holy spark in everything, and it cannot ascend any other way: either you eat it in holiness and lift it, or you return it to the Holy One in truth. That is why one who wants to bring a sacrifice today, when the Temple no longer stands, should fill the throats of Torah scholars with meat and wine. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, leaves us with the question every table asks: did you lift what you ate — or did you leave the spark where it fell?
