π¬ Before Noah was born, they sowed wheat and reaped thorns. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, reveals what the Midrash means by an uncalibrated world β and the three things Noah opened: order, livelihood, and the work of human hands.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens with a startling Midrash: before Noah was born, they would sow and the seed would not grow β something else grew instead. They sowed wheat and reaped thorns. The world was not merely disorganized; it was uncalibrated, like a new device that has not yet been tuned. People lived eight and nine hundred years amid confusion, hardship and incomprehension. The moment Noah was born, the world began to balance. The rabbi brings the principle of Rabbi Yonatan of Satmar: there is soil in which a fruit has never been sown, so they sow it and remove it, sow and remove, until the soil becomes accustomed and the fruit can finally grow. So too the Holy One, blessed be He, built the world and destroyed it, built and destroyed, until it could hold the essence of the world.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, then explains what Noah actually did. Until Noah, people worked with their hands, but the hand was closed β there was no livelihood, only sorrow under the curse of βby the sweat of your brow.β Noah prepared plows for them; Noah arranged plow and sickles and axes and all tools of labor. His mind brought the first innovation in the technology of the world. From Noah, livelihood was released, hands were freed, and ingenuity began to create. And here the rabbi reveals the foundation: the covenant. When a person guards the holy covenant, he is called circumcised in everything, and it is as if he has a world β divine assistance, blessing, livelihood. Whoever profanes the covenant finds his affairs difficult. That is why Lamech said of Noah: this one will comfort us.
