Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, opens with Nakdimon ben Guryon, who taught a great principle: even when there is no rain — a drought, showing that G-d is angry with the world — the Gemara in Tractate Taanit says the day of rain is so great that even a penny in one’s pocket is blessed. When it rains, everything is more blessed; without rain there is no blessing. Nakdimon sacrificed himself: he did something beyond strength and beyond logic, giving everything he had — not because he was obligated, for the Torah obliges no more than a tithe — but in innocence, so that the Jews would have water to drink. And for that, G-d did for him beyond strength: the sun stood still, and he was called Nakdimon ben Guryon.

That is why the grandfather Rabbi Meir Abuhatzeira and all the righteous say: beware of innocent people, for the blow of an innocent person is harder than any blow of the cunning. He also tells of Rav Preida, who repeated a word of Torah four hundred times for a slow student who did not understand, and merited that his entire generation have a place in the world to come. What will overcome this generation is not cunning, but one thing: “Be wholehearted with the L-rd your G-d” — sincerity. Teach your children to be sincere, and blessing will descend upon us all.
