The Mikdash Melech, a commentary on the holy Zohar, states that one who wears white clothes on Shabbat rectifies and forgives sins against the holy covenant. There are two types of suffering. One is harsh — prison, cancer, poverty, things that break a person. The other is bearable — a fine from a policeman, tight pants, a missed flight, or worrying over nothing. If a person has no merits, the harsh decree stands; but if he has merits, the Holy One, blessed be He, can turn the harsh suffering into light suffering. This, says Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, is the power of wearing white on Shabbat according to the Kabbalah: the decree is whitened, giving light suffering instead of harsh.
