Even honoring your father and mother has certain boundaries. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, gives a clear example: a person’s parents tell him to marry a certain woman, and he says, “I don’t want to.” He does not have to listen to them. With all due respect — and the respect is immense — he should not marry. If he thinks it is good, he takes it as a suggestion. “Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long” — yet there are limits to this honor.
When does that boundary get crossed? Teaches Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a: when honoring a parent would lead a person to a place of destruction and ruin — or if a father tells his son to commit sins — then he does not have to listen to him. The honor remains immense, but it is not unlimited.
