It is a custom in the holy Shuva Israel community to read Parashat Balak on Tuesday. It is known from the holy books that Parashat Balak has immense power, teaches Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a: if, G-d forbid, someone plots evil against a person or intends to harm them, by reading Parashat Balak they are protected — just as Balak came with Bilaam ben Beor to the desert to see the people of Israel and curse them, while Israel did not see or understand what they wanted. Two men stood there watching, trying to cast an evil eye and harm the people of Israel, who had no idea what they were doing; they thought they were just passers-by, like tourists looking at the children of Israel, but they sat and plotted evil — and the Holy One, blessed be He, did not let them prevail.
A person who reads Parashat Balak, explains Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, blocks anyone who is sitting and planning to harm them, hurt them, or cause damage or trouble to them or their family — so that their plans and schemes do not succeed. “Many are the thoughts in a man’s heart, but the counsel of the Lord shall stand.” A person can plan and act, but the counsel of Hashem prevails.
