Everything we have in life is something in which we must rectify holy sparks — something where a part of our soul is bound up with that specific thing, teaches Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a. Take a fruit: it contains holy sparks. When a person eats the fruit and says a blessing, he elevates the fruit and rectifies something connected to him. A person has a table — as long as there is still a rectification and holy sparks in the table, the table remains connected to him. The moment he finishes the holy sparks in that table, he no longer wants it, he does not love it.
A person is in a house: as long as he still has sparks in that house, the house is good for him, comfortable, and he is happy in it. The moment he exhausts the holy sparks — his rectification in that house — the house becomes bad, loathsome to him; perhaps someone else now has sparks in it, and suddenly they see the house, love it and want it. Therefore, explains Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, a person must be careful not to give up on things while those things still hold sparks he would be losing. Only after a person knows he has exhausted the thing to the very end should he release it — and know how to release it in the right way. The things that are not good for you, not healthy for you — know how to release them in the right way; for if you do not, you will stay with them, and they will harm you and be bad for you.
