Before Yom Kippur, Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, rosh yeshiva of Shuva Israel, opens the meaning of the day through the Order of the Service of the High Priest. Rosh Hashanah is the day of judgment for the entire world; but Yom Kippur, he teaches, is a gift given to the people of Israel alone — the day Moses came down with the second tablets, when the Holy One, blessed be He, gave us “for on this day He shall atone for you.” So even if a hard decree was written on Rosh Hashanah, this day can annul it, repair it, and set it right.
Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, shlit’a, then opens the two central services of the Holy of Holies: the burning of the incense, which atones for the soul and has the power to stop plague and divine wrath; and the two goats — identical in height, weight and age, chosen by lot, one for Hashem and one for Azazel. Delving into the depth of the lot (goral) and its parallel with Purim, he reveals the inner work of the day: purifying body and soul, and turning everything — even charity and the building of Torah — into pure, holy service before the great and awesome day.
