בסייעתא דשמיא
In the wake of a long journey across the Holy Land—from the joy of a Brit Milah to the bittersweet elevation of a Torah scroll dedicated to a soul lost on Simchat Torah—our honored teacher and master, Rabbi Moshe Yoel Pinto, Shlita, shares a message of profound hope and identity.
In the latest episode of the Shuva Israel Podcast, the Rabbi explores the deep mechanics of the Jewish soul and the eternal mystery of why G-d chose us to be His people. As we prepare for the holiday of Shavuot, we must understand that we are not just commemorating an old story; we are entering a live event that has the power to rewrite our entire existence.
The Root of Enmity: Why the World Still Watches Us
The nations of the world have often looked at the Jewish people with a hatred that defies logic. Abraham our forefather was the pinnacle of kindness, distributing food, medicine, and wisdom to all, yet he was cursed and envied. Our Sages ask: Why is the mountain called Sinai? Because from this mountain, Sinah (hatred) descended upon the nations.
The world recognized the immense virtue the Jewish people attained at that moment. But that hatred isn’t a relic of the past. It persists because the giving of the Torah is renewed every single year. Every year, G-d examines the world anew and chooses to whom He will give His Torah.
The Prayer Barrier: Unlocking the Abundance
Have you ever wondered why some prayers seem to go unanswered? Rabbi Pinto reveals a staggering truth from the masters of Kabbalah: Every prayer is answered. When a Jew cries out, the abundance and light descend from the L-rd immediately.
However, there is a mechanism in the Heavens that acts as a “stopping point.” A Heavenly Court examines whether we have the merits—through our Torah study and our treatment of others—to receive that light. If we are lacking, the abundance stays “stuck” in the upper realms. The Holy Torah is the key that unlocks these gates, allowing the blessings of health, livelihood, and success to finally reach our homes.
The Lineage Factor: Why Slaves Were Chosen
The nations of the world once asked G-d: “What did You see in this small, broken nation? They were idol worshippers in Egypt, just like us!”
The L-rd replied: “The children of Israel bring Me books of inheritance (lineage), but you do not.”
In the depths of the Egyptian exile, the Israelites had hit spiritual rock bottom. They were humiliated slaves with no rights and no visible merits. But they had one thing no other nation possessed: They were not ashamed of their roots. Even in the impurity of Egypt, they wrote their names in the genealogical tree next to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They believed with complete faith that the holiness of their forefathers would eventually return to them.
G-d chose us not because we were perfect, but because we refused to sever our connection to our holy source.
“Nothing Stands in the Way of Will”
We often hear the saying that “nothing stands in the way of will,” but few know its religious origin. Rabbi Pinto explains that this principle is rooted in the acronym for David ben Ruth.
Ruth was a Moabite woman whom many thought should never be accepted. David was a youth whose own lineage was questioned by the leaders of his time. Yet, through sheer willpower and an unbreakable attachment to G-d, they rose from “zero potential” to become the foundation of the Mashiach.
On Shavuot, we are all elevated to a level higher than prophecy. We are purified from the “scars of the soul” and given the chance to start over. Like the desert where the Torah was given—a place that is empty and lacks everything—we learn that we don’t need to travel the world to find “holy sparks.” One minute of true Torah study can elevate your soul and your fortune from anywhere on earth.
This Shavuot, do not look at your past. Stand at the foot of the mountain and realize that G-d is looking at you as if you arrived for the very first time today.
